Sorry I'm late responding....just got back from the coast last night...all I can say is 2009, 10 and 11 were amazing but this is the best yet!!! Cant wait to see it complete and award it to the lucky winner :)

Angels and Ministers of Grace defend us! You two are going to do 4 (FOUR!!!) balls in an irregular cage and that . . . that . . . rosette as well? I swoon at the thought! My hands hurt. And . . . let me guess . . . you are going to do it in maple or Brazilian cherry or yew, right? This will be one seriously complex undertaking. Best of luck! I'm sure it will turn out more magnificent than the concept.

What an absolutely wonderful story! I used to love all the olive trees around Firenze.

And this is a great design for olivewood, too - seems too pretty to cut up with piercings and lots of detail.

Maybe I'll eventually come up with a design I like well enough to use the board I've had hidden away downstairs for several years.

Poor cleaver... ;)

Oops - meant to also say, if I have a really beautiful piece of wood, I prefer to save it for a design with larger solid, smooth areas so it can be shown off. In fact, I usually stay away from woods that always have a really gorgeous grain (like olivewood), even if I like to carve them, because they are so pretty. And I agree - that second one from the top is a perfect way to make a spoon from that gorgeous wood! You & nature make a good team!

thanks Laura! yes, this the same birch I used for last year's Americymru spoon. It's almost all used up now, so I'll be pretty sad when it is gone!! I've got a great photo of the owners of this spoon 'Christening' it with some Penderyn and Schnapps...how cool is that??

This is great, David! Is this out of that birch? Exuberant - that's exactly what it is! Just beautiful. And, the bowl is exceptional. And, by the way, the only two Lovespoons my husband has were both Valentines gifts. :)
